New Orleans Fishing Report

January 05th, 2021

We're off to a great start for 2021. The new Bluewave 2400 Purebay is proving to be a solid platform to work out of. Plenty of space in the boat and the ride has yet to disappoint. The first few days of the month have provided good action for speckled trout, marsh bass, blue cats, and redfish. On Sunday John, Greg, and Jason caught countless bass, keeping 40 of the better sized ones. The large catch was a nice finish to the 30 specks the guys caught earlier in the morning.

December 2020

December has started off cold. Redfish have been easier to chase lately, and the Trout fishing should really  improve in the next couple weeks. We're catching trout, but it takes time to put numbers in the boat. Not really finding them "stacked" anywhere. Victory Bay's new chariot should be here any day now, so I'll be taking a week off to swap the current boat for the new one.

Warm November

We've yet to have a good cold snap come through. The fishing is good, but not as easy as I'd like. Water temps are still in the low 70's mid month, so the shrimp have not completely left the area causing the Trout to be scattered all over. We have pulled some really nice trout out the lake though. The Redfish are eating well on the warmer days. I have not been seeing schools the last couple weeks since the water temp came up though. Sheephead and Redfish are thick in the lake though. Fishing the reefs with live shrimp has yielded very nice catches of Sheephead which are the best tasting fish in our area. Too often anglers toss back Sheephead due to the mistaken belief that they are hard to clean. A Sheephead will fight just as hard as a Redfish, so it can be a fun time catching them in numbers. It was a busy month, and I thank Captain Justin, Captain Andy, Captain Claude, and Captain James for the help for the extra trips I had. Everyone did an outstanding job, as always.

October is Great!

The fishing has been great this month. The Redfish are schooled up, and the Speckled Trout are closer to home. A lot of White Trout in the area, thanks to several storm surges we have received this year. With the numbers I've been seeing all summer, I think November and December will offer spectacular fishing for Speckled Trout. Live shrimp fished with a drop shot has been the common method for Trout. The Redfish are just eating anything thrown at them. With the right conditions, and an accurate cast, a limit of Redfish can be easily had right now. Some of the best days for tide in November are still open. If your schedule is flexible, contact me and I'll choose the right day.

Excellent Fishing in September

The fishing has been right on track this month. October and November should be incredible. The Redfish bite has been very good. Days that we catch a limit of Reds early allow the opportunity to spend the rest of the trip chasing Speckled Trout. The Trout are right where they're suppose to be, so we're not running too far. Fishing in the local area has been heating up as well. With a seemingly over abundant crop of shrimp in all of the lakes and marsh, the fall and winter months ahead should produce very good numbers of fish.

Previous Trips during July and August

Pictured above are previous trips from July and August last year to show the fishing can be good this time of year. There can be some days when you've got to work for each fish, due to the water temperature holding in the upper eighties. This time of year, dead shrimp under a cork or live shrimp fished deep on the bottom will be the most productive method of catching Redfish. When fishing the deep holes in the lakes, our poles are rigged with 20lb braid connected to 15lb mono or fluorocarbon line, with either a drop shot attached or a carolina rig. Also lurking on the bottom amongst the Redfish can be Flounder, Black Drum, Sheepshead, and the occasional Speckled Trout. Currently we are waiting for a Tropical wave to dissipate. Though the rain is preventing the boats from leaving the dock, the wave has brought a stiff east wind, which will push salt water into the area. Once the rain passes, I'm sure the Speckled Trout will be a very short drive away.

The summer time is a great time for catching Redfish. Many choice dates are available, due to Covid-19 causing travelers to cancel their plans.
There are a lot of fish out there waiting to be caught right now. The boat and gear are clean and ready to go. Victory Bay Charters will provide you an unforgettable experience in the scenic coastal marshes of Louisiana.

Good Fishing and VBC's COVID-19 Response

5/19/2020

The summer bite has kicked off as the shrimp and mullet move back in. With numerous dates left open as a result of the Pandemic, I've been enjoying many "scout" days with friends and family. The Redfish are plentiful and eating well. Some days they're all 16" - 17", and some days you can't find one under 27". Trout are still in the local area, but the non-stop 20mph wind has made it hard to target them.

In response to the COVID-19 situation, the boat, as well as gear are all wiped down extensively after use now.

In addition to the detailed cleaning procedure, I will not be meeting customers at the marina during peak times for recreational boaters. With a large portion of the population off work, the marinas have been extremely busy (which is great for them!). In order to minimize exposure to the crowds, the boat has relocated down the road to the Spots and Dots Lodge.

Your health and safety is my number one priority.

If you have any questions or concerns about booking a trip, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The unfortunate spread of Covid-19 has Victory Bay Charters closed. Our son, "D3" has Down Syndrome, and out of caution for him, we are isolating at home while the virus continues to spread. We are enjoying some quality family time though.

Hoping that business can resume at the end of April. I am booking trips for the summer and fall. September through November will fill up fast, so please do not wait until it's too late.

God Bless,
Captain Drake Morvant
